Let’s Keep Our Faith In Science

With gas prices on the rise we there is more and more pressure to find alternative resources. Should we drill and risk another BP oil spill or should we increase our nuclear power and risk an event similar to what Japan is facing right now? Science has rarely looked so jaded.

“Science has been annexed by the new atheists to prove that human beings are insignificant and God does not exist,” says James Hannam, author of The Genesis of Science: How the Christian Middle Ages Launched the Scientific Revolution. “Modern science is the greatest achievement of western civilization.  That also makes it the greatest achievement of Christian civilization.”

In The Genesis of Science, Hannam exposes the most damaging myths of early science including:

·        The Inquisition executed people for their scientific ideas

·        Galileo was persecuted by the Church because he believed that the earth orbited the sun

·        People of the “Dark Ages” believed the earth was flat

·        Throughout the Middle Ages, science and technology were at a standstill

There is no such thing as the “Dark Ages”

Professors, scientists, and historians taught you “facts” about the medieval times, they told you about the horrific treatment of people and about how scientific advancement was halted until the Renaissance. Surely they wouldn’t have lied to you right?

“The period has received bad press for a long time. Recently, the word has affixed itself to the Taliban, whom commentators routinely describe as throwbacks to the Middle Ages.” says James Hannam, author of The Genesis of Science: How the Christian Middle Ages Launched the Scientific Revolution. “Popular opinion, journalistic cliché, and misinformed historians not withstanding, recent research has shown that the Middle Ages was a period of enormous advances in science, technology, and culture.

In The Genesis of Science, Hannam exposes the most damaging myths of early science including:

  • The Inquisition executed people for their scientific ideas
  • Galileo was persecuted by the Church because he believed that the earth orbited the sun
  • People of the “Dark Ages” believed the earth was flat

Why do we celebrate President’s Day? While most Americans will enjoy a day off from work and school on Monday, it is essential to remember why we really have that coveted vacation day and take the time to reflect back on the great men of our past.

“As we pause in our busy lives for a minute to honor the Presidents of our nation, we should remember that during their service to our country, they encountered many challenges and conflicts,” says Jackie Cushman, author of The Essential American: The 25 Documents and Speeches Every American Should Own. “It is important that we remember, recall and retell their important stories to determine how to best face our present and future challenges and remain an exceptional nation.”

In The Essential American, Cushman remembers the past in order to shape the future. Cushman’s book includes speeches from 9 presidents, including:

  • “Warnings of a parting friend” George Washington’s First Inaugural Address
  • “We are all Republicans; we are all federalists” Thomas Jefferson’s First Inaugural Address
  • “The Union is unbroken” Abraham Lincoln’s First Inaugural Address
  • “Happy is the nation that has a glorious history” Theodore Roosevelt’s The Strenuous Life
  • A rendezvous with destiny” Ronald Reagan’s A Time for Choosing
